The Sting of the New Orleans Hornets
The Sting of the New Orleans Hornets
The New Orleans Hornets originally got their start as the Charlotte Hornets. After joining the NBA in the 1988-1989 season, the Hornets played in Charlotte until 2002 when they moved to Louisiana, where they remain.
Due to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina on the state of Louisiana in 2005, the New Orleans Hornets were forced to move their team out of the area for two seasons. Damage to their arena required repairs, and flooding in the area made it too difficult for fans to get to the games.
Other locations in Louisiana were mostly being used for disaster relief efforts. Because of this, the team played their 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 seasons in Oklahoma City, becoming known as the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets during those seasons. They did manage to play a few of their games in New Orleans, but not many.
Once back home in their own city, the New Orleans Hornets hit a winning streak, making it to the playoffs in both the completed seasons since, and even winning their first division title in 2008.
The home of the Hornets is of course a repaired New Orleans Arena. Although there was some damage during the hurricane, the arena faired better than many structures and was opened just a month after the storm for medical operations that were relocated from the Superdome. With seating for more than 18,500 people for basketball and more for other events, the arena is a busy place. Concerts are often held there and other events such as PBA tournaments and WWE events are common.
In the community, the New Orleans Hornets are as active as any other professional sports team. Not only were they helpful in getting the area back to its former glory, but also they remain active especially in helping the youth of Louisiana. Reading and other educational programs, as well as fitness and mentorship programs are in place, helping children in the area to better realize their potential.
Entertainment at Hornets games can’t be beat. Hugo, a hornet and mascot of the team can be seen at home games having fun and encouraging fans to cheer on their team. He is of course in very good company. Also appearing at home games are the Honeybees dance team, the Used to Bees senior dance group, and the Stingers junior dance team. They also have drum lines, a dunk team, and the Buzz Patrol helping on court with contests and throwing T-shirts to the fans.
Out of adversity and tragedy, the New Orleans Hornets have re-emerged as a team to watch. This amazing group has shown they can overcome anything and the fans in New Orleans are lucky to have the support and entertainment provided by the Hornets franchise.
